After taking the matter to the media and instigating a campaign of political motivation being the reason why the government insisted on demolishing the building. Also giving credence to the fact that the demolition had political undertone, PDP governorship candidate in Oyo State, Engr Seyi Makinde paid a solidarity visit to the Fresh FM Station same day.

In a statement issued by the Seyi Makinde organisation and signed by Prince Dotun Oyelade, Makinde said he had to personally visit the station to confirm the incident because he believed that no government under civilian rule could contemplate, not to talk of actually bulldozing a popular Radio Station under a flimsy excuse.

Engr Makinde also met the chairman of the radio station, Dr Yinka Ayefele, and said that his visit was beyond politics as the sad development endangers freedom of speech, which is the rock upon which true democracy is built. As he walked through the ruins of the station amidst wild jubilation from thousands of people who thronged the station in sympathy and disbelief, Makinde said that what the state government did was selective justice, sparing hundreds of structures to target the radio station out of sheer vendetta.

However, an aggrieved source has reached out to WakeUpAfrica, claiming that the issue of the demolition has been on for a long time. According to the source, “Fresh FM was not destroyed. If you tune in now, it’s still live on air. What was fixed was the extra structure that contravened the planning law. In 2017, over a year ago, the Oyo State Government went cap in hand to dialogue with Fresh FM about their extra structure that was contravening the planning law of the state. They advised them to fix it. Fresh FM ignored the Government and even made jingles abusing the government.

Second Demand For Building Permit

The Govt practically begged Fresh FM through several written documents, to produce the building permits as the extra building was contravening the law. Fresh FM accepted the letter and rather than to start adjusting the building themselves, they instead chose to listen to politicians who advised them to dare the government even at the detriment of the safety of the people of Oyo State. This is the proof of the letters.

It is also important to note that, If the Govt want to put the radio station off air, it’s mast would have been pulled down, rather it was it’s infraction on town planning that was dealt with.

Third Demand For Building Plan

Nigerians! We trivialize and politicize every action of Government even when done in the interest of the public or safety of the users, most especially when it concerns the rich. How many properties of the downtrodden that governments have demolished for overriding public interest, without hues and cry? May God help us all”, he concluded.

From the documents made available to WakeUpAfrica360, the Oyo State Government wrote series of letters to the Management of Fresh FM, between 2017 & 2018, all of which were ignored. Also some media houses confirmed that Fresh FM went back on air few hours after the demolition and is currently transmitting.

What do you think of this latest development? Do you still think Oyo State Government did wrong by demolishing some part of the building?
