Chaos As Hoodlums Throws Stones At Buhari, Osinbajo, Others During APC Ogun State Rally

The Presidential rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, ended abruptly as quite a number of hoodlums who support a rival political party and its governorship candidate, arrived the stadium venue, chanting the praises of their own candidate, and at same time threw stones at all the dignitaries, including President Muhammadu Buhari, but the President’s security aides shielded him from being hurt.

President Buhari had arrived the stadium around 3 pm in company of the Vice – President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, the National leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Chief Bisi Akande, Governor Abiola Ajimobi, former Governor Rauf Aregbesola, Chief Segun Osoba, the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Prince Dapo Abiodun. The President hurriedly raised the hand of Abiodun shortly after his address at the rally and was whisked out of the stadium immediately.

The problem started when Oshiomhole announced that they were in Ogun State for the presidential campaign and to also give Dapo Abiodun the emblem of the party as the governorship candidate. This seemed to be the news that the hoodlums were waiting for, and they quickly started another round of hurling stones and other objects at the APC leaders and dignitaries.

There was chaos as people scampered for safety as the hoodlums continued with their acts of terror, and refused to calm even after Governor Ibikunle Amosun, pleaded with them not to “disgrace” him.

The chaos had started even before President Buhari arrived as the hoodlums had been singing and praising the opposition governorship candidate, while also sacking the supporters of Prince Dapo Abiodun, the governorship candidate of APC, from the stadium. The did this by throwing stones, shoes and other dangerous weapons at the APC members who had come to await the arrival the President.

Many people sustained injuries in the 1;45mins of attacks, forcing thousands of people to leave the stadium before the President arrived. Some of the hoodlums brazenly boasted; ”This is Ogun and nobody can intimidate us” as they kept throwing stones at the fleeing APC members and supporters of Abiodun. Many insiders are alleging that the attacks may have been sponsored by Governor Ibikunle Amosun. This was because even the Fuji musician who was supposed to entertain the crowd, geared the hoodlums with inciting lyrics, and the security agents within the stadium, who were supposed to ensure peace and order at the venue, acted as though they were on holiday.

Though dozens of armed soldiers and other security agencies tried to prevent other hoodlums from entering the stadium, it was still a futile attempt as the number of hoodlums outnumbered the security agents.

There are deep concerns over the safety of the APC chieftains such as Senator Gbenga Kaka, Abiodun’s running mate, Noimot Oyedele – Salako, Chief Tolu Odebiyi and others, because we don’t know if they left the stadium unscathed.
