University Of Ibadan Lecturer Who Burned Himself To Death May Have Been Depressed
eA lecturer identified as Mr. A. O. Subair set himself ablaze on Saturday. The lecturer who works in the Department of Mathematics, University of Ibadan, set himself on fire in his senior staff quarters located at Phillipson Road of the University. He was immediately buried at Akinyele public cemetery according to Islamic rites.
According to reports, the late mathematician recently resigned from the university without a justifiable reason but was yet to pack out of the staff quarters before he took his life. Insiders cited that the lecturer may have killed himself from depression, as he was reportedly separated from his wife and children, and had also been having challenges progressing on his career.
Chairman Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Professor Deji Omole, who confirmed the incident to reporters, described the incident as pathetic and a major loss to the Union. Omole said, “We were only informed of the burning flat while efforts to save him proved abortive.” Omole urged members of the Union to confide in one another saying “isolation could deepen depression which may culminate in suicidal ideation.”
Subair was survived by three children.
