Hurray! Lagos Third Mainland Bridge Is Very Safe

So for some days now, viral videos of the Third Mainland bridge in Lagos shaking were circulated all over. This created a huge panic amongst regular users of the bridge, as most of them swore never to use it.

Others have simply diverted to other alternative routes to the Island, and the result has been heavy traffic in these routes.

However, NICE Lagos Chapter, sent a technical team to inspect the bridge to ascertain the security threat it poses.

And from the report they made after the visit, we can safely say the 3rd mainland bridge is safe for us. What a relief.

Find the report below

A technical visit was made yesterday 22nd April 2019 to Third Mainland Bridge by *NICE Lagos Chapter* under the leadership of the Chapter’s Chairman Engr. Lola Adetona, MNSE, with the Controller of Works in Lagos, Engr. Adedamola Kuti, FNSE, the National PC and VC of the Institution in persons of Engr. James Owivry, FNSE, Engr. Tokunbo Ajanaku, MNSE respectively.

Others are Engr. James Akanmu, FNSE, Engr. Olayinka Abdul, FNSE, Engr. Sherifat Adeleye, MNSE, the NSE Lagos Branch Chairman, Engr Musiliu Agoro, MNSE and APWEN Lagos Chapter Chairman, Engr. Mrs. Laolu Adedapo-Aisida, MNSE.

Also at the inspection were the Chairman and Gen. Secretary of NSE Apapa Branch, Engr. Sunny Ejeje, MNSE and Engr. Monsurah Abimbola Alagbe, MNSE respectively and others..

We, as an Engineering body can help to allay the public’s fears that:

a. The expansion joints are not the structural parts of the bridge and do not have structural bearing on the stability of the bridge.
b. The third Mainland bridge is safe for vehicular and human traffic.
c. The FMPWH did an underwater integrity test on the bridge 3 weeks ago and the reports were analyzed and the results are ok.
d. The weak expansion joints, 12 nos. have never been worked on over 35 years of the bridge life.
e. FMPWH have awarded repair works on the weak expansion joints and procurement has already been made towards this. Work would commence soon.

NOTE: Federal Government normally does period maintenance on all the bridges, which is always between 4 – 5 years. In the past 11 years, maintenance on this particular bridge, TMB was done 2008, another one in 2012/2013, while the present one (for 2018/2019) started last year and still ongoing..

*The Third Mainland Bridge is indeed safe for all!*

Thank you for your patience!
