Certificate Scandal; CJN Tanko Muhammad Claims His Certificate Was Destroyed By Termites

The Senate finally confirmed Tanko Muhammad as Chief Justice of Nigeria and that makes him the Chief Justice of Nigria. However, as soon as Muhammad was confirmed news filtered in that Muhammad didn’t have primary school certificates, and this was discovered during his screening at the senate.

Tanko Muhammad, had responded to the enquiry about his certificate, by saying that vicious termites destroyed his primary school certificate, when they invaded his home in 1998. “No portion of the certificate was salvaged”.

Muhammad however presented an affidavit which he submitted to the Senate and led to his subsequent confirmation. Got additional credentials that Mr Muhammad had used for his confirmation, from unknown sources.

In those documents, it was shown that Mr Muhammad swore an affidavit to back up his destroyed certificate in February 13, 2002, while he was a judge at the Jos Division of the Court of Appeal. He eventually became a Supreme Court judge in 2007. Tanko Muhammed was nominated by President Buhari after the removal of Mr Walter Onnoghen, in 2019.

Mr Muhammad, had also faced age falsification allegations during his time as a Sharia court judge, an Abuja based lawyer had sued him for that, but the case was struck out on May 31, by a federal judge, on the premise that the complainant had no right to file the lawsuit in the first place, as there was o evidence to back up the allegations.

A N10 Million fine was also imposed on the lawyer for instituting a frivolous case in contravention of extant rules of the judiciary. There are no indications if the case went o appeal or not.
