An IPOB members at the Nigerian Ambassador’s Residence In Tokyo

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group which has been proscribed as a terrorist group in Nigeria and which is headed by Nnamdi Kanu, has stirred the hornets’ nest again, as they protested in Tokyo, Japan, immediately President Buhari arrived the city. The IPOB had previously threatened that they would protest in Japan if Buhari came there and had warned him not to come to Japan, and it seemed they wanted to make good their threats.

Recall that the IPOB members attacked and hurled stones at the former deputy senate president Ike Ekweremadu, when he visited Nuremberg Germany, while that dust was yet to properly settle, they again protested at the Nigerian ambassador’s house in Japan, they came with some policemen demanding the arrest of because he is an impostor, according to them.

They claimed that Buhari was Jubril from Sudan and they needed to take his blood sample for a DNA test to prove their theory. They also claimed they had their doctor with them, who was expected to conduct the test. They said that if the test proved their theory, they would hand over the alleged ‘Jubril’ to the policemen for prosecution. All through the protest, the Japanese policemen on guard kept calm as the situation played out.

However, the Presidency has denied the stories and visuals circulating the media about the protest and harassment of President Muhammadu Buhari by the proscribed IPOB. In a statement through the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Femi Adesina, it claimed that Buhari had nothing to do with IPOB since arriving in Yokohama, Japan. The President was in Yokohama for the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development, which starts today August 28 and ends on August 30.

The Presidency claimed in its statement that the stories were concocted by “hate mongers,” in order to tarnish President Buhari’s image. “The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra group has had nothing to do with President Muhammadu Buhari since he arrived Yokohama, Japan. Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora are urged to disregard concocted stories, backed with spurious visuals, of any protest or harassment of the President and his team. President Buhari will make his presence at the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7) count for Nigeria, and no scare-mongering will detract from the outing.”
