Few Days To Kogi Elections, SDP Supporters Decamp TO APC + SDP Secretariat Vandalized & Burnt

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) chapter in Kogi State, is seriously under threat, and more dramatic things seem to continually happen to the party as the elections draw nearer. The breaking news as at this morning is that, supporters of SDP have decamped from the party to join the APC. This move of abandonment of the SDP candidate Natasha Akpoti, is coming few hours after suspected thugs set fire to the Secretariat of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Lokoja.

According to information available to WakeUpAfrica360, the SDP Secretariat was razed at about 1am on Monday, and valuable items such as furniture, documents, electrical equipment and campaign materials were burnt. Incidentally, that was not the first attack on the building, which is a stone’s throw to the state Police Command Headquarters in Lokoja. The Secretariat had also been vandalised on Saturday, Nov. 9, by suspected armed thugs, before it was burnt down two days later. The rented building is said to belong to AVM Ndatsu Umaru, a former military governor of Kwara and Kano States.

Mr Akeem Busari, the State Commissioner of Police, confirmed the incident saying that the police had started investigation on the arson and would definitely bring the perpetrators to book. There is no doubt that these incidences have increased fear of insecurity in the state, as there is palpable fear and tension among the residents.

The State Chairman of the SDP, Alhaji Mukhtar Atima, reacted to the burning of the Secretariat by accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) od spear heading the attack, because of the fear of defeat, which starred them in the face. “The APC had to “release their boys to unleash terror on our party.”

He also said that the governorship candidate of the party, Mrs Natasha Akpoti was being threatened from some quarters.

”No amount of harassment and destruction will deter the party and its governorship candidate from contesting and winning the Nov. 16 election,” he said. He entreated the party members and supporters to remain peaceful and avoid the uncivil conducts of members of the APC. While, Mr Kingsley Fanwo, Chairman, Media Committee, Bello/Onoja Campaign Organisation denied the allegations that the hoodlums responsible for the arson were sponsored by the APC.

“Bello and the leadership of the party are currently engaged in rigorous campaigns, and there is no time for irrelevant issues now.”

But with recent decampment of key supporters of the SDP to APC, one is left to wonder, if indeed all is well.
