The 2019 edition of the Ghana Beverage Award (GBA) would be held on virtual space and broadcast live on the appropriate television channel on June 13, 2020. This, according to our source was made known by the planning committee of the Ghana Beverage Award and reason being the coronavirus pandemic. According to the Chief Executive Officer of Global Media Alliance (GMA), Mr. Ernest Boateng, in a statement signed by him on Tuesday said, the award, in its four year had closed nominations to the public and all beverage companies in February 2020. The theme of this year’s award is: Inspiring Excellence in Ghana’s Beverage Industry. The Global Media Alliance will plan the award in partnership with the Ghana Tourism Authority, Consumer Protection Agency, Food and Beverage Association of Ghana and the Food Research Institute. The award ceremony will aim to promote both local and foreign beverages as well as participation of small-scale beverage enterprises in the country. The Ghana Beverage Award board had to adjust the award ceremony due to the presidential directive on prevention of the spread of the coronavirus. According to them, “we have all been advised by the President to adhere to all the social distancing protocols and other directives which will help in the control of the spread of the coronavirus. As an organization we have found a way to go ahead to celebrate excellence in the beverage industry while adhering to all the recommended directives without endangering lives. This is why we have agreed to organize the awards virtually”.

In line with the above, the virtual awards will still maintain its world-class standards known to patrons and stakeholders without losing the significance and integrity associated with it. There will be a public voting between March 2 and March 20 for the Ultimate award of the year which happens to be the Product Of The Year. Events line up to this year award ceremony include but its not limited to a beverage industry tour which will be planned by the Ghana Beverage Award Board where there will be visits to nominated companies to learn more about their work and practices.. There is also an introduction of two new categories to the award. They include the local Beverage Advertisement Of The Year and the International Liqueur Of The Year. This two new categories came to be in order to recognize and acknowledge consumer’s feedback as these consumers has been instrumental in the nomination phase.

On other news, Ghana is doing every thing possible to tackle the coronavirus outbreak in the country. According to reports, preparations started early this year after news was received of the devastating impact of the virus in China, Italy, Spain and Germany.

Speaking in a media briefing on the coronavirus, Dr. Badu Sakordie stated that the country’s strategy moved from preparatory to respond mode after the first case of the virus was recorded in the country. Actions taken include: border closure, restrictions on social gatherings, closure of all universities, public and private schools, observing social and physical distancing and hand hygiene. This actions are key in controlling the virus from spreading as the world awaits the discovery of a vaccine to cure it. These actions has impacted positively and the effect of the virus on the country compared to other countries can be said to be minimal.
