AVM MUAZU BECOMES INEC ACTING CHAIRMAN as yakubu awaits senate confirmation.
Wakeupafrica360 correspondent in Nigeria reports that the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu had on Monday in Abuja handed over the affairs of the commission to Air Vice Marshal Ahmed Muazu (rtd) as the acting chairman of the commission pending Yakubu’s confirmation by the senate. President Buhari had on October 27, 2020 reappointed Yakubu for another tenure of five years, subject to confirmation by the senate. Prof. Yakubu was sworn into office on 9 November 2015 and his first tenure of office ended on 9 November 2020, alongside 5 INEC commissioners; Dr. Antonia Taiye Okoosi-Simbine (Kogi), Alhaji Baba Shettima Arfo (Borno), Dr. Mohammed Mustafa Lecky (Edo), Prince Adedeji Solomon Soyebi (Ogun), and Mrs. Amina Bala Zakari (Jigawa) who once acted as INEC chairman for some months in 2015. The seven national commissioners whose tenures still subsists are; Prof. Okechukwu Ifeanyi, Mohammed Haruna, AVM. Ahmed Muazu, Barrister Festus Okoye, Dr. Adekunle Ogunmola, Mrs May Agbumuche Mbu and Abubakar Nauhuche who has resigned a few days ago due to ill health.
Speaking in a brief handover ceremony, Prof. Yakubu said; “As you are already aware, the renewal of my tenure as chairman of the commission has been announced, subject to confirmation by the senate. Our work as election managers require us to enforce the law, regulations and guidelines. In doing so, we must demonstrate strict respect for, and compliance with the constitution of Nigeria and subsidiary laws. Consequently, it will be inappropriate for me to remain in office beyond today, 9th November 2020 without confirmation by the senate and swearing to another oath of office as provided by the law”. He further added that it was the resolve of the other national commissioners to appoint AVM Ahmed Muazu (rtd) to oversee the affairs of the commission. “Pending the conclusion of the statutory process, the remaining national commissioners have resolved that AVM Ahmed Muazu (rtd) will oversee the affairs of the commission. It is therefore my pleasure to hand over to him in the interim. We have worked as a team for the last four years. Therefore, there is nothing new to anyone of them”.
Muazu performed his first assignment as acting INEC chairman by coordinating the swearing in of a new Resident Electoral Commission (REC), Chukwuemeka Joseph Chukwu from Abia state who was deployed to Ebonyi state. The commission stating from Tuesday, under the acting chairman will consult with political parties and civil society organizations and then further meet with the media and Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) on Wednesday. The commission will thereafter meet with the RECs on Thursday to decide on a date for the conduct of the indefinitely postponed National Assembly and States House of Assembly bye-elections in eleven states.
