Jubilee Vice-Chairman, David Murathe Says The Party Will Support Impeachment Motion Against William Ruto
Jubilee vice-chairman David Murathe has said Jubilee Party will throw its weight behind articles of impeachment against Deputy President William Ruto if presented before parliament. Murathe, who made the remarks during an interview on K24 on Thursday, January 28, said the party’s leadership will not hesitate to whip its MPs to support the motion insisting DP Ruto had grossly violated Chapter Six of the Constitution. His remarks came about three weeks after ANC party asked the second-in-command to resign or risk being impeached for “disrespecting” his boss President Uhuru Kenyatta. ” The party shall support anybody who brings a motion to impeach the deputy president on account of violation of chapter six on ethics and integrity,” said Murathe. If Jubilee manages to rally its MPs to back the motion, it will be a major boost for ANC which only has about 12 MPs in parliament. For Ruto to be impeached, at least 233 (two thirds) MPs need to support the motion. For the motion to be quashed, Ruto will need 171 MPs to escape his critic’s guillotine. The ODM party is yet to officially announce if it will support the ouster motion. However, the likelihood of the Raila Odinga-led party to second the DP’s impeachment is high. Siaya Senator James Orengo, Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna are among ODM members who believe the DP is incompetent and should not be holding public office. Ruto’s stalwarts, nevertheless, believe it will be an uphill task to impeach the DP since “he enjoys the support of the majority of MPs in parliament” On Wednesday, January 28, ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi described Ruto’s impeachment as a matter of national interest.
Mudavadi is among leaders who have been questioning the source of Ruto’s wealth. The ANC chief and Raila have been suggesting that Ruto’s monies are proceeds of ill acquired wealth which need to be investigated. During his interview on Thursday, Murathe supported remarks made by Senate Chief Whip Irungu Kang’ata who wrote to the president and informed him the BBI was unpopular in Mt Kenya region. Already, some 41 Mt Kenya lawmakers have written to Uhuru stating they are unable to market Raila who happens to be the BBI’s political father in the region.
